We've been seeing a new kind of
coffee drink all over our social media feeds lately. Called dalgona
coffee, the beverage involves milk topped with a foam made with
coffee and sugar-somewhat like a reverse cappuccino. It's especially popular on
TikTok, where you'll find users from all over the world posting their own
attempts at making it.
The drink itself has origins from
India, Pakistan, and Macau, where it is also known as whipped
coffee or beaten coffee. But its surge in popularity happened when
it appeared on a Korean TV show called Pyunstorang in January. In it,
actor Jung Il-Woo traveled to
Macau, tried the drink, and gave it the nickname dalgona for its
resemblance to the traditional Korean sponge candy of the same name. It's since
caught the eye of TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram users the world over,
and-perhaps with almost everybody at home now-it's gone especially viral these
past few days. The best part is, it's relatively easy to whip up in your own
kitchen. I tried it in home and it came out rather nicely. Here is how I did
it.
Preparation Time: - 5 min
Cooking Time: - 5 min
Servings: - 2~4 persons
Ingredients:-
- 2 tbsp Instant coffee or espresso powder
- 2 tbsp Sugar
- 2 tbsp very hot water
- 2 cup or 400ml milk
- 1 tsp Chocolate syrup (optional)
Preparation: -
- Heat 2 tbsp water near boiling point.
- Add Instant coffee powder and sugar to it.
- Whisk them for about 5 minutes to make a thick mixture. You can use a hand whisk or use an electric hand-held mixer, whip the coffee mixture until it is light brown, fluffy and holds stiff peaks when the whisk is removed.
- Take two large glasses and spread little chocolate syrup on the sides of the glass and little bit on the bottom. This is totally optional. I like it but it may not be very popular option.
- Heat the milk, if desired, and divide between these two glasses. Spoon dollops of the frothed coffee mixture on top and smooth out with a spoon.
- If you want to make the coffee cold you can add a few ice cubes before pouring the milk.
Please note:-
- Always use instant coffee powder. This recipe will not work with others.
- Whisk it continuously otherwise it can take you more than 15 minutes to make this cold coffee.
- Use hot water and not cold water to make this.
Now your Dalgona coffee is ready
to serve. This coffee is served by adding the thick coffee mixture on top of
the milk and ice but to drink this coffee you have to mix it well until
everything combines. Enjoy…
