Bhapa Dimer Dalna - Baked Egg Indian curry

Yum
Bhapa Dimer Dalna or baked egg curry is a traditional Bengali curry which is very easy to cook and require few ingredients. It is very nutritious and delicious too. Hence I thought of presenting the recipe here-

Preparation Time: - 15 min

Cooking Time: - 30 min

Servings: - 4 persons

Ingredients:-

For Baked/Steamed Egg/ Bhapa Dim:

  1. 4 Eggs
  2. 1 Large Onion, finely chopped
  3. 1 tbsp Ginger, finely chopped
  4. Handful Coriander leaves, finely chopped
  5. 1/3 cup Milk
  6. ½ tsp Baking Powder
  7. 1~2, finely chopped Green Chilies
  8. Red Chili Powder According to taste
  9. Salt According to Taste

For the Gravy:

  1. 3-4 tbsp Oil (I used Mustard oil as this recipe is traditional Bengali one, you can use any vegetable oil as you wish if you do not like the pungent smell of the mustard oil )
  2. 1 tbsp Ginger Garlic paste
  3. 4 medium size potato cut into small cubes
  4. 1 medium Onion, finely chopped
  5. 2 medium Tomato finely chopped
  6. ½ tsp Cumin Seeds
  7. 2 Bay leaves
  8. 1 tsp Turmeric Powder
  9. Red Chili Powder: 3 tbsp or according to Taste (I used Kashmiri Chili Powder)
  10. 2 slit Green Chilies
  11. Salt to Taste
  12. Sugar to balance the saltiness only/to taste
  13. 1 tsp Garam Masala powder

Preparation:-

For the Baked/Steamed Egg/Bhapa Dim:

  1. Beat the Eggs and mix onions, ginger paste and all other ingredients into a thick batter.
  2. Taste before you put the mixture inside the steamer to taste the salt level
  3. Pour the mix in a covered container and place it in a pressure cooker with little oil inside the pot to avid sticking of eggs in bottom.
  4. Cook for 5 minutes or till 1 whistle. If using Microwave put the container in microwave for 4~5 minutes
  5. Turn off the gas; open the lid of your steamer /Pressure cooker; take out the pot very carefully and keep it aside to let it cool.
  6. Cut the baked egg into small cubes with a knife and take it out of the container.

For the Gravy:

  1. Shallow fry the egg cubes and keep aside.
  2. Boil the potatoes and keep aside.
  3. Take a medium kadai / pan and heat the oil in high heat.
  4. When oil starts smoking turn the burner into medium heat.
  5. Then put the cumin seeds and bay leaves into it.
  6. When the spices crackle, add onions and fry till the onions become translucent.
  7. Put ginger garlic paste in it.
  8. Add tomato pieces and stir to mix.
  9. When the tomatoes become mushy and emanates water add the boiled potatoes.
  10. Continue stirring and add 1 cup water.
  11. Add the turmeric powder and red chili powder here. I use Kashmiri red chili powder as I am not much spice lover but you can use as much chili as your taste permit.
  12. Now you can add the silted green chilies.
  13. Add salt and the sugar to balance your taste-buds.
  14. Now put all those pre-made steamed egg cubes into the gravy and mix them well.
  15. Lower the flame and keep it for a couple of minutes.
  16. Sprinkle garam masala powder and switch off the flame.

Your Baked/ Steamed Egg Gravy or Bhapa Dimer Dalna is READY; garnish it with some coarsely chopped coriander leaves and a BIG smile.

Serve as a side dish with any Indian fried rice/Pulao/roti.
