Jamun Raita - Indian Blackberry in whisked curd

Jamun is generally avoided as a fruit for its bitter tangy taste but it has excellent health benefits.
  • Jamuns are low on calories, which makes them the perfect healthy snack. They also aid digestion and promote natural bowel movement.
  • Jamun juice has bioactive phytochemicals that minimise the risk of liver disease and cancer.
  • They are also known to be effective in treatment of diabetes. Extracts of bark, leaves and seeds are used in combination with herbs to reduce levels of glycosuria and blood sugar.
  • Jamun juice acts as a natural astringent and is used as a mouthwash, as it eliminates bad breath.
  • The pulp of this fruit is used in the treatment of gingivitis (bleeding gums).
I personally like this fruit as it is but in my family none loves to eat this fruit. But I was determined to introduce this in our diet… so I prepared this raita where the taste of jamun is enhanced by the roasted cumin powder and pudina (which itself is another healthy addition).

Preparation Time: - 5 min

Cooking Time: - 5 min

Servings: - 2~3 persons

This is one of the fastest to prepare and use very few ingredients as follows:


Ingredients:- 


  1. ½ cup deseeded finely chopped ripe black jamun
  2. 1 cup whisked curd (dahi) or yogurt. If you are calorie conscious then you should use low-fat curd, made from fat-free milk
  3. ½ tsp roasted Jeera/cumin powder
  4. 1 tbsp finely chopped Coriander leaves
  5. 1 tbsp chopped mint leaves
  6. Salt to taste. Black salt is preferred
  7. A sprig of coriander for garnishing


Preparation:-

  1. Whisk the curd thoroughly. If you are using thick curd/yogurt you can add a little bit of water.
  2. Chop the Jamuns and keep aside.
  3. Roast cumin seeds for a few seconds in a small frying pan over high heat.
  4. Combine the curd, chopped Jamuns, roasted cumin seeds, coriander leaves and mint leaves in a bowl and mix well but slowly.
  5. Garnish with a sprig of coriander leaves and few Mint leaves.
  6. Chill in refrigerator for ~30 min optionally if you want it cold.
Serve as a dessert after any Indian fried rice/Pulao or you can have it as a dip with fat-free Khakras.
